Giant-killers Burkina Faso qualified Saturday for the African Cup of Nations semifinals by defeating Tunisia 8-7 in a penalty shootout to break a thrilling 1-1 overtime draw.

The victory touched off wild celebrations in the capital. Burkina Faso was considered an underdog going into the tournament, in which it qualified as hosts.

Tunisia became the second World Cup qualifier to be knocked out of the tournament by a low-ranked contender following Cameroon's ouster by a surprise Congo side on Friday.

Burkina Faso opened the scoring with a 45th-minute penalty kick after Tunisian goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel was judged to have fouled striker Firmin Sanou.

Striker Kassoun Ouedraogo stepped up to hit the ball into the roof of the net.

In the second half, the hosts were thrown on the defense by aggressive Tunisian attackers, who failed to connect on several key chances on goal. Burkina Faso's goalkeeper Ibrahima Diarra made several excellent saves.

Striker Hassen Gabsi finally closed the gap by slamming the ball into the net from close range in the final minute of play.

In the last minute of a dramatic extra period, Tunisia's Zubeir Beya missed a chance to send Tunisia ahead, but Burkina Faso's Diarra pulled off a diving save.

After both teams missed two penalties each and with the goals 8-7 in Burkina Faso's favor, Tunisian captain Sami Trabelsi side-footed the ball wide of the post.

Tunisia trudged off the field and out of the competition as thousands of delirious fans flooded onto the streets of this normally-sleepy city.
