Campos: 12 saves in win over Peru

LOS ANGELES, April 16, 1998 (AP).

Luis Hernandez scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute as Mexico defeated Peru 1-0 Wednesday in a soccer match watched by 22,650 at the Coliseum.

The penalty was called on Peru's Jorge Hudman, who used his hands to stop a shot. Peru goalie Oscar Ibanez was able to stop eight other shots.

Mexico goalie Jorge Campos made 12 saves.

The game was the first in Los Angeles for the Mexican national team since winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

A announced crowd of 91,225 at the Coliseum watched Mexico beat the United States 1-0 on Feb. 15 for the Gold Cup crown. The only goal scored then was also by Hernandez on a header in the 43rd minute.

Mexico used the same lineup it is expected to employ in this summer's World Cup in France. Peru narrowly missed qualifying for the World Cup.
