LOS ANGELES, California, February 13, 1998 (AP).

Luis Hernández scored 15 minutes into overtime to give Mexico a 1-0 victory over Jamaica on Thursday night, setting up a championship match against the United States at the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.

The U.S. team defeated Brazil 1-0 Tuesday in the other semifinal to advance to Sunday's championship game at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Mexico will be going for its third consecutive Gold Cup championship.

Hernández scored his third goal of the tournament in the final minute of the first overtime half. He received a long pass from Pavel Pardo and headed a 7-yard line drive over the right shoulder of goalkeeper Warren Barrett to bring the pro-Mexico crowd of 45,507 to life.

Hernández, who spent much of this season with Argentine power Boca Juniors as a reserve, almost won the match with another header in the 88th minute. But the ball hit the crossbar and was cleared on defender Stephen Malcolm's bicycle kick.

Mexico nullified Jamaica's speed by using a short passing game through the midfield, and by effectively marking Jamaica's biggest offensive threats, forwards Deon Burton and Paul Hall.
