KINGSTON, Jamaica, January 28, 1998 (AP).
Jamaica was held to a 0-0 draw in a friendly international by a youthful Swedish team five days before the World Cup qualifiers meet world champion Brazil.
The Jamaicans, coming off a disappointing four-week tour of Brazil, were matched by the Swedes Thursday night in a fast-paced
game at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Jamaican coach Rene Simoes said the game was a perfect tuner for his team's opening CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Brazil February 3.
"I don't see this match as a draw, but a win, and that's what we're hoping for against Brazil," he said.
With the tie, Jamaica stretched its unbeaten home run to 32 matches. It was the second stop on the Scandinavians' North American tour. They lost 0-1 to the United States on January 25 in Miami.
The Swedes got a glorious chance to go ahead after 17 minutes, but midfielder Marcus Lantz's shot from 18 yards (meters) was deftly parried by Jamaican goalkeeper Warren Barrett.
The best chance of the game went to the Jamaicans. With four minutes remaining in the first half, English-based forward Paul Hall's shot was cleared off the line by a defender.
Both teams shared possession in the second half, though the Jamaicans created more scoring chances. In the 57th minute, midfielder Theodore Whitmore got a clean shot from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball struck just wide of the target.
