LOS ANGELES , February 9, 1998 (AP).

Jamaica qualified for the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup by defeating El Salvador 2-0 Monday night.

Jamaica will play Mexico on Thursday night at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The United States will face defending World Cup champion Brazil in the other semifinal, on Tuesday night.

Marcus Gayle began the scoring in the 41st minute. He took a long pass from Paul Hall, outjumped goalkeeper Santos Rivera at the penalty spot and headed the ball into the net from 9 yards.

Fitzroy Simpson scored the second goal on a free kick in the 62nd minute. After Salvadoran defender Nelson Rojas tripped Deon Burton on a breakaway, Simpson powered a 23-yard line drive into the upper-right corner of the net.

El Salvador had two chances to move ahead before Gayle scored. Williams Renderos' diving header from 8 yards sailed past the left post in the 18th minute, and goalkeeper Warren Barrett tipped Waldir Guerra's 17-yard line drive in the 36th minute.

But El Salvador's best chance came in the 68th minute, when Barrett tipped Guillermo Rivera's powerful 25-yard free kick to the right.

Jamaica played with 10 men in the final 22 minutes after defender Christopher Dawes received his second yellow card of the match. Dawes will miss Thursday's semifinal against Mexico. El Salvador's Ronald Cerritos also received his second yellow card with three minutes to play.

The match ended midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos' 11-year career with El Salvador's national team. Cienfuegos, the team's playmaker, said Friday he would leave the team when the Gold Cup concluded.

Cienfuegos, who plays for Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, made 62 appearances for El Salvador and competed in qualifying for the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups.
