LOS ANGELES , February 8, 1998 (AP).

Paul Hall scored twice to lead Jamaica past Guatemala Sunday in a first-round match at the Coliseum.

Jamaica would advance to the semifinals against Mexico or the United States unless it loses to El Salvador by three goals or more on Monday night. If Jamaica wins, it would play Mexico on Thursday night. If it ties or loses by two goals or fewer, it would play the United States on Tuesday night.

Guatemala was eliminated.

Hall, who competes for Portsmouth in England's First Division, scored the match-winning goal in the 67th minute.

Fitzroy Simpson took a corner kick from the right side and sent the ball to Marcus Gayle, whose header while airborne saved the ball from going across the end line. Hall secured the ball and headed a line drive from six yards into the net.

That goal gave Jamaica a 3-1 lead, but Guatemala's Guillermo Ramirez narrowed the deficit n the 84th minute with a 12-yard shot.

Hall scored the match's first goal in the 14th minute by converting a rebound from five yards. Juan Carlos Plata tied the score two minutes later on a penalty kick, but Andrew Williams gave Jamaica a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute with a 19-yard line drive.
