MUSCAT, Oman, February 19, 98 (AP)
Germany got off to a good start in its World Cup warmup with a 2-0 victory over Oman.
German coach Berti Vogts fielded a number of international players in the Wednesday match, including Jurgen Kohler, Andreas Moller and Thomas Hassler as well as younger, less experienced players in an attempt to test as many players as possible.
The Germans took command from the start but, fearing injuries, attacked cautiously.
Kohler's 26th minute strike put Germany on the scoresheet and although the Germans continued to control the field, they failed to add to their tally in the first half.
In the 62nd minute, Jorg Heinrich scored to put Germany 2-0 up after a fast break from the defense.
The Omanis rarely threatened the German goal, but in the final minute, Hashem Saleh shot over the bar with only goalkeeper Jens Lielman to beat.
On Monday, Germany will meet Asian champion and World Cup qualifier Saudi Arabia in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
