Spain drubs Sweden 4-0 in World Cup warmup |
 |
VIGO, Spain March 26, 1998 (AP).
A goal in
the opening minute by national
team newcomer Fernando
Morientes launched Spain
toward a 4-0 drubbing of
Sweden in a World Cup
warm-up game here
Wednesday.
Twenty-year-old Morientes
knocked the ball in from three
yards out after Sweden's keeper
Hakan Svensson fumbled a
save. The Real Madrid striker
slotted in a second four minutes
later from a shot 16 yards (meters) out following a clever back flick by fellow Real Madrid youngster Raul Gonzalez.
With Spain totally outclassing their opponents before some 25,000 spectators, Raul made it 3-0 in the 30th minute when finding himself unmarked at 12 yards (meters) he fired the ball past Svensson.
Sweden, a side which finished No. 3 in the 1994 World Cup but failed to qualify for France this year, made only one serious attempt on goal in the first half when Henrik Larsson had a strong header from seven yards (meters) fingered over the bar by Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta.
Second-half midfield substitute Imanol Exteberria hit home the fourth, 25 minutes into the second half when he took down a bouncing ball on the edge of the six-yard (meter) area and lobbed it into the top left-hand corner of the goal.
Spain lost its previous friendly against World
Cup host France 1-0 in January. It plays its
final warm-up game against Northern Ireland
on June 3.
The side is grouped with Bulgaria, Nigeria
and Paraguay in the World Cup.
