MIAMI , February 4, 1998 (AP).

Jamaica astounded World Cup champion Brazil on Tuesday night, holding it to a 0-0 draw in an opening round match of the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament.

Brazil threatened the Jamaican goal throughout the 90 minutes of regulation but could not get any shot past goalkeeper Warren Barrett before 43,754 at the Orange Bowl.

Brazil's final scoring opportunity was with five minutes remaining as Romario took a pass from Denilson deep inside the box but Barrett raced toward Romario to deflect the shot.

Seconds later, Romario did put a shot past Barrett but was called offside.

At the 79th minute Edmundo drilled a shot toward the post that Barrett deflected out of danger.

Jamaica, which will be playing in its first World Cup this summer, had two scoring opportunities during the second half.

Paul Hall drilled a shot which was stopped by goalkeeper Taffarel in the first minute of the second half.

In the match's final minute, Jamaica's Theodore Wilson was elbowed by Brazil's Junior Baiano outside the Brazil penalty area setting up an indirect free kick. But Fitzroy Simpson's shot sailed over the goal.

Brazil also enjoyed most of the scoring opportunities during the first 45 minutes.

Romario's 15-yard shot from the right wing was stopped by Barrett in the opening minute of the match.

In the 20th minute, Romario fed Edmundo with a centering chest pass inside the box, but Edmundo's shot sailed over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Edmundo dribbled past Jamaica's defense, but Barrett ran to meet Edmundo's point-blank shot and deflected out of danger.

Jamaica's best scoring chance was in the 14th minute, when forward Paul Hall's 18-yard shot from the right wing was deflected by Taffarel.

Brazil will play Guatemala in its second-round match Thursday night in Miami. Jamaica faces El Salvador Friday night in Los Angeles.
