MIAMI , February 6, 1998 (AP). Guatemala held World Cup champion Brazil to a stunning 1-1 tie in a first round match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Thursday night, after Juan Carlos Plata scored a goal four minutes into injury time. Two days earlier, Jamaica held Brazil to a scoreless draw in an opening round match of the tournament. Plata headed Martin Machon's corner kick just inside the right post, beating Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel and giving the Guatemalans their second tie in two games at the Gold Cup. Brazil dominated play throughout the first half, but could not score.Two Brazil goals were called offside. Romario finally managed to get the ball in the net in the 79th minute, but only with a penalty kick. Romario was tripped by Guatemala's Engelbert inside the penalty boxand his penalty kick goal broke a 168-minute tournament scoring drought for Brazil. In the 22nd minute, Romario had a goaldisallowed by an offside infraction. Then, with four minutes remaining in the half, Guatemala's Nelson Caceres kicked a shot into his own goal, but Brazil's Zinho was offside on the play. Guatemala's best scoring opportunity before the equalizer was in the 38th minute, when Plata was fouled by Cesar inside the penalty box. But referee Ramesh Ramdhan ruled an indirect free kick from six yards out and Machon's shot was deflected by Taffarel. Brazil concludes its first-round matches against El Salvador Sunday in Los Angeles. Guatemala meets Jamaica, also in Los Angeles on Sunday. The top two finishers in Group One, featuring Brazil, Jamaica, El Salvador and Guatemala, advance to the tournament semifinals next Tuesday and Thursday in Los Angeles.
