BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, April 1, 98 (AP)
With goals by Pablo Islas, Diego Latorre and Walter Samuel, Argentine league team Boca Juniors trounced Mexico 3-1 in a pre-World Cup warm-up match.
Jaime Ordiales opened the scoring for Mexico in the second minute of a match played to only a few hundred spectators.
Hopes for a good game after Mexico's early goal -- a header by Ordiales from a corner shot by Alberto Garcia Aspe -- quickly died down as both teams played an excessively friendly match.
The ball stayed mainly in midfield, and chances to score were few and
far between. After 24 minutes Islas scored the equalizer with a grounder from a great pass by Claudio Caniggia.
In the second half Boca mounted its attack, while Mexico just tried to weather the storm. In the 75th, Diego Cagna blocked a Mexican attack in midfield and passed the ball to Latorre, who scored with a chip shot from outside the box.
Minutes later, a great shot by Caniggia
smashed into a goalpost. Boca dominated the
action practically at will, and clinched the
game in the 85th with a header by Samuel
from a Caniggia pass.
