Croatia beat 10-man Germany to move into World Cup semis
LYON, July 4, 1998 - (AFP)

Little Croatia beat 10-man Germany 3-0 to move into the semi-finals of the World Cup here on Saturday thanks to goals from Robert Jarni, Goran Vlaovic and Davor Suker.

Norwegian referee Rune Pedersen sent off Christian Worns leaving the way clear for a Croatia goal spree to set up a Stade de France meeting with France on Wednesday.

Worns was given his marching orders for a brutal tackle from behind on striker Suker leaving German coach Berti Vogts with his head in his hands.

Vogts knew what the dismissal meant to his ageing squad forced to vastly increase their work rate. And Croatia made them pay.

Just five minutes after Worns red card Croatia were in front when Robert Jarni's blistering shot on the stroke of half-time left Andreas Kopke helpless.

Vogts put out-and-out striker Ulf Kirsten on for attacking midfielder Thomas Haessler for the last 20 minutes but nothing was going to deny Croatia revenging their Euro 96 defeat at the hands of the Germans.

Germany's World Cup was all over with Vlaovic's second goal in the 80th minute, another devastating shot from outside the box.

When Suker hit Croatia's third five minutes later, it was the final punch against a once great team.
