PARIS, June 18, 1998 - (Reuters)

South Africa's Alfred Phiri was suspended for three matches on Friday for "very dangerous play" after being sent off during a 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday.

The ban is the most severe at the finals so far.

Phiri was dismissed for elbowing Thomas Helveg in the face in the 69th minute of the game which saw a record three substitutes sent off.

In a statement, FIFA said Denmark's Miklos Molnar, dismissed for a foul, received a two-match ban for very dangerous play while teammate Morten Wieghorst received a one-match suspension for very dangerous play.

Wieghorst was sent off for a tackle on South African Benedict McCarthy.
