Matthaus continues to rewrite World Cup record book
MONTPELLIER, June 29, 1998 - (AFP)

German veteran Lothar Matthaus continued to rewrite the World Cup record book here on Monday when he played in the Germans' second round win over Mexico.

Last week the 37-year-old Matthaus broke the appearance record when he came on as a substitute in the first round against Yugoslavia.

On Monday he clocked up 1,958 minutes of World Cup action, beating compatriot Uwe Seeler by eight minutes, and third-placed Diego Maradona by 15 minutes.

Matthaus was recalled to the 1998 squad after a four-year absence caused by a falling out with coach Berti Vogts. France 98 is his fifth consecutive World Cup.
