England, Hoddle tells Ince to calm down
PARIS, June 29, 1998 - (AFP)

England coach Glenn Hoddle has told tough guy midfielder Paul Ince to calm down for the potentially explosive Argentina game.

Temperamental Ince risked a red car in England's last game when he gave the the Mexican a verbal tackle from behind.

Ince was furious with Arturo Brizio Carter after he came in for rough treatment from Adolfo Valencia and Hoddle fears that his inspirational anchorman could get into trouble if he lets Argentina light his short fuse on Tuesday in Saint Etienne.

Ince had to go off near the end after Valencia hauled him down from behind -- but before he left the pitch he made his views known to Carter in no uncertain terms.

Carter had in fact not been sparing with red cards when previously on World Cup duty, issuing five in just half a dozen matches at USA 94 and in France.

But in Valencia's case he kept the card in his pocket.

Hoddle, knowing that the Argentina game has plenty of firecracker potential, said he was worried England might allow themselves to be intimidated and that Ince in particular had to cool it.

"Paul needs to keep it controlled. He's got to maintain his discipline. He is discplined but every now and then he goes.

"But its human instinct. Paul was upset about what had happened to him and he reacted."

Hoddle said as long as England kept their cool and their minds on the job they could beat Argentina, who ended their hopes in 1986 in Mexico when Diego Maradona destroyed them with his "Hand of God" goal and a brilliant second.

"I've not seen any reason to suggest we can't beat Argentina. We're going into it with a positive step in our stride," Hoddle insisted, adding England always performed best against the top sides.
