A city of contrasts -the contrast of a history marked by the duality of a royal and a working city, the contrast of buildings in which the new and the old cohabit, the contrast of a population originating from an ethnic melting pot -Saint-Denis is both surprising and appealing, it has inherited a prestigious past but has always looked forward to the future.

For a long time, one talked of "Paris-near-Saint-Denis", with the capital of France being a kind of suburb of the royal city. Saint-Denis, an important city in Medieval and Capetian France and a commercial centre from the Middle Ages, was the site of the illustrious 12 century abbey which contains the tombs of nearly all the kings of France since Hugues Capet. For the last century, SaintDenis has been the home of many companies, thus perpetuating a tradition of"fine professions". Today, the SaintDenis Plain, together with part of Aubervilliers and SaintOuen, is the largest business zone in the Ile-de-France. It is an area undergoing tremendous development and has therefore attracted large corporations such as Siemens and Panasonic, Gaz de France and Electricité de France, the TVG workshops and numerous audiovisual activities.
But Saint-Denis is not only an industrial city with a rich and prestigious heritage, but also a cultural centre, famous for its theatre, music festival and book fair.
