Nantes was the seat of the Dukes of Brittany when in 1532, following the marriage with Duchess Anne, the union between Brittany and France was sanctioned by Francis I. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Nantes became the leading commercial port of France. The city built its fortune oninternational commerce and, in particular, the "triangular trade" with Africa and the West Indies. Industrialization was the next step, initially linked to maritime trading: ship building, then biscuit-making and canning. At present the fourth most important industrial site in France, the Loire estuary which includes Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, has based development on its main poles of excellence. These are maritime engineering and the food growing industry, to which should be added mechanical, electronic and civil engineering. |
