Photo Montpellier A thousand years, what a splendid age! Pilgrims discovered it on the way to Compostela, merchants stopped by as they plied the salt route. Students and scholars turned it into a leading Euro-Mediterranean city thanks to the Faculty of Medicine, the oldest in the world. Rabelais, Rondelet, Nostradamus contributed to the prestige of the university. Jewish, Arab and Christian rectors succeeded one another: the tolerant Montpellier opened its doors to the world.
Montpellier's golden age started in 1204. Its charter transformed it into a real and prosperous democracy. It was Spanish and Catholic for two centuries, then became Protestant under the reign of Henri IV.
He was responsible for laying out the wonderful Botanical Gardens. When it was under siege by Richelieu and Louis XIII, the city built a citadel to protect the city from its citizens!

Calm and prosperity returned in the 18th and 19th centuries. The city became the seat of the Languedoc States and finally acquired the status of capital. Trading and banking developed when wine production reached its peak. With the influx of a young and energetic population, the city has expanded in the last twenty years, and its well-balanced development policy has taken into account all sports, social and work activities. Montpellier is a flourishing city where many French citizens would like to live.
