The city started by being a Roman colony (43 B.C.), founded by Muniatius Plancus on the Fourviere Hill. It was called Colonia Copia Claudia Augusta Lugdunum under the reign of Emperor Claudius. Later, Lyon became the capital of Celtic Gaul, then a centre of Christianity, as testified by the Cathedral of Saint John and the Fourviere Basilica.
Photo LyonIts favourable position was at the origin of its commercial vocation and enabled the city to develop silk and textile industries in the 18th century. The beautiful mansions around Saint John's Square reveal the opulence of a period when trade, finance, printing and silk turned Lyon into a thriving city.
Since the beginning of the 20th century , all kinds of industries are represented in the surrounding area of Lyon, while its regional resources have permitted the establishment of steel and chemical plants.
The TGV, the development of the Edouard-Herriot Port, the Satolas and Bron Airports (for tourism and business travel) has made it possible for Lyon to maintain a high level of activity and to organize international trade fairs.
