| Over the centuries, Lens has always been the object of bitter fighting, especially during the first world war when it was completely destroyed.
With the discovery of coal, Lens expanded considerably for a century, thanks to an economic boom and population explosion. Paradoxically, it was just when the decline of the coal industry started, around the sixties, that Lens was raised to the status of a county seat in 1962, thus encouraging it to initiate an unprecedented modernization programme. The establishment of businesses in Lens has developed in a spectacular fashion in the last few years: there are now over 19,000 employees, with more than 5,000 persons working in the 116 companies newly established in the seven business zones of Lens. Many of these companies are expanding rapidly in the fields of advanced technology, farm-produce, distribution and construction. Parallel to this economic expansion, the city of Lens has also equipped itself with a number of sports, cultural and university facilities. In a symbolic gesture, the vast offices which used to house the coal-miming services were given back to the population thanks to the City Council which helped to create the Jean Perrin College of Science in 1992. A total of 3,000 students pursue higher studies in the various academic institutions of Lens. |
Key figures Population City : 35,000 inhabitants. Agglomeration : 350,000 inhabitants. 1853 Lens became the headquarters of the most powerful Coal Mining Company in France, because of the large quantities of coal extracted and also because of its subsidiaries; this rsulted in the city's expansion. |
